Does Good Posture Require Back Support?
Does Good Posture Require Back Support?
Cultivating good posture and maintaining appropriate back support are important steps in reducing your chances of back pain or injury. Good posture is a way of training your body to stay upright , and back support is sometimes necessary to maintain that posture. Back support is needed for people who spend long hours in office chairs or car seats, and also for people who walk or stand all day. If your posture is good, then your own back is your most effective form of back support. If you still need some posture training, then back support devices may be needed. If you spend too much of your day sitting, you can improve your posture and get the back support you need with a simple lumbar pillow. If you stand all day, then perhaps your posture could be improved with a back support belt or bra. Your posture will only benefit temporarily from these back support aids, however. Eventually, your muscles will have the greatest effect on your posture, so getting them in shape is your most effective means of back support.
Posture and Back Support Aids
Proper posture is a necessary part of back health, and sometimes back support aids are a necessary aid. Effective posture allows your body to stand, sit and lie in positions which place the least amount of strain on your muscles. If you need back support aids in order to achieve that effective posture, then you should make use of them. However, your posture should not entirely be the product of your back support aids. Your muscles need training and strengthening in order to maintain that posture. The back support you will get from strong and flexible back muscles will be far more effective than a lumbar pillow. Your posture should be maintained while sitting, standing or lying down, and no back support aid can offer that kind of flexibility. If you have very poor posture and you are beginning to experience back pain, then a back support aid could be helpful – but don’t stop there. Exercising and conditioning your back will provide far better and more lasting support than anything you can get in a store.
