Back Support
Who Needs Back Support?
Everyone needs back support. The more proper question is; who should use external back support? When your back is strong enough to do its job properly, it supplies most of its own support. Even when your back has been temporarily injured or strained, extra back support devices are not needed as much as proper therapy and exercise to heal the back. In many cases, though, a person’s lifestyle may require them to stand, sit or walk for very long periods of time. Particularly when they must do this with an injured back, some temporary, external form of back support is a good idea. Lumbar cushioning, back belts and even back braces can provide temporary back support and ease the strain on already painful back muscles. Prudent use of a mixture of pain management and therapeutic exercise remain the best means of healing an injured back, though. Once the back is healed, and if it is maintained properly, your back should be able to support itself just fine in most situations.
Back Support for a Healthy Back
If you have a healthy back and a fit body, then the best back support you can find will be your own back. Your back is a very well-engineered structure of bone, muscle, tendon, and ligaments which work together to keep the structure upright and sound. If your normal day has a good blend of standing, sitting, walking, and sleeping, then your back has all the support it needs. If, however, you are blessed with a healthy back but an unhealthy lifestyle, perhaps some external back support is in order. The most common enemies of a healthy back is sitting in one position too long. We sit in cars, at desks, and in front of the TV. Many people slump forward or backward after many hours in the same chair, which is not a healthy position for your back. A properly made chair and some lumbar cushioning could offer back support when sitting. Having the right mattress on your bed is another useful kind of back support. Many mattresses, chairs and cushions are available to help support our backs.
Back Support for an Injured Back
When your back is strained or injured, then back support becomes nearly as important as oxygen. Injured backs are often unable to support themselves in any position for very long, yet our lifestyles often dictate that we sit, stand or walk for long periods of time, if for no other reason than to get the bills paid. The most common kinds of back support available are for sitting up. Specially made chairs are available, along with lumbar support cushions and chair seat cushions which naturally center the spine. Other forms of back support include back support bras or back belts. These methods of back support are most useful when walking or standing for long periods of time. Back belts are also very useful for preventing back injuries, especially when lifting heavy loads. A sturdy mattress suited for your normal sleeping position is another very effective method of back support. The best form of support for an injured back, though, is to let the back heal. If your back condition is not permanent or degenerative, then strengthening your back with the right exercises will give you all the back support you need.
